Class 7-Online Communities and Relationships

In today's class, we visited virtual abilities Island. This is an online community where people with disability have a place to be creative, connected with other people and get support from one another. Gentle Heron is the founder of virtual disability island and she first, begin explaining how the community works with the use of words and her microphone. She types while she speaks because this helps deaf people to feel included in the community. Gentle Heron talked about how the community is run, what they do there and what virtual abilities island is.

After speaking to Gentle Heron we began hearing from other residents of virtual ability island. Talking to these residents gave me a better understanding of what they do on the island and how it has benefited there lives. Virtual abilities island has hugely benefited these peoples lives, it gave them support and a place to be themselves. Learning about how the being apart of this virtual ability community has brought so many people together, were they created connects that were brought into the real world, is very interesting.By visiting virtual island i learned so much about the different type of technology disabled people can use to take part in the community. It was very interesting to learn about how some people can type with their toes because they don't have the use of there hands and all the other available technology.

It was interesting to hear about this community because it introduced me to a new way to use second life and how people with disability have another way to communicate and spend there days. Over the summer I worked in a summer camp for physical and mental disabled people and I learned a lot about the struggle these people go to and a lot about myself. working in this kind of camp over the summer I thought I knew a lot about the different technology and support disabled people have access to. I will be telling the camp I worked with other the summer about this vertical community and maybe they could help in some or introduce more campers to the island, so they can also experience what these other people experience.
